Gameloft Connect: an iTunes for mobile games!

PC to handset shop aims to remove download hassles

Gameloft Connect: an iTunes for mobile games!
|

You've used iTunes, right? The beauty of Apple's music store is that it just works. Browse songs, pay for the ones you want, download them and then synch them with your iPod. It's slick and painless. If only someone would make a similar thing for mobile games, eh?

Well, they have. Gameloft has just launched something called Gameloft Connect, which you can find on the publisher's website. It's a PC application that lets you browse Gameloft's games, download them, and then quickly transfer them over to your phone by connecting it to your PC.

It's PC-only at the moment – bad news for those of us who prefer Macs – but Gameloft is offering some cool deals to tempt people to try the service.

Your first download costs £1, with regular prices starting at £1.99. And for every five games you buy, you get one free. Blackberry and smartphone games are also included in the catalogue.

For gamers, Gameloft Connect is an intriguing glimpse of how the way we buy mobile games could evolve in the future. Our only quibble is that it appears to be just Gameloft games.

Although this is perfectly logical from the publisher's point of view, it'd be nice if someone could come up with this kind of iTunes-style application covering all the big publishers. Still, if you have a PC, it's well worth giving this service a try in the meantime.
