If you buy a Nintendo Wii console, you'll get more out of your DS too. That was the message from company president Satoru Iwata in Japan last night, who revealed a bevvy of tasty DS tidbits in a presentation that predominately focussed on its upcoming bigger brother, which is due to go on sale towards the end of the year.

For instance, it seems you'll be able to hook up your DS to the Wii console and use it, in Iwata's words, as a 'touchscreen controller'. Not exactly unexpected (purchasing an adaptor enabled you to do a similar thing with the GBA and Gamecube, and doing so unlocked new content in a few Nintendo games) but welcome nonetheless, although how it will fit into the motion-sensing control universe of the Wii console remains to be seen.

By connecting the DS to your new Wii, you'll also be able to transfer game content from the Wii to the DS. Iwata didn't elaborate on what exactly this might entail, but accessing demos and trailers bundled onto Wii games seem like one obvious use.

Finally, Nintendo believes even more of us want DS handhelds – Reuters reports it's increasing production by nearly 38 per cent following the introduction of DS Lite into Europe and America this month.

You can see the full press conference if you're mad for more, but beware, it's in Japanese!
