There's been a lot of idle chatter about mobile 3D in the past 12 months – how it will revolutionise games, attract a whole new audience and cure cancer.

Yet most of the supposedly 3D games we've witnessed to date have either been a bit underwhelming or not really 3D at all.

Publisher Bobbee Tec is promising to change all that, proudly describing its new first person shooter Cyboid as no less than a 'mobile 3D gaming breakthrough', at least if you have a higher-end Symbian phone or N-Gage.

Due for release next week on the latter and the Nokia 7650, there will be a complex 3D world to explore, and all the running, jumping, swimming, teleporting and shooting you'd expect.

You'll be able to test out the game's weapons on up to seven fellow players too, as well as on the game's computer-controlled otherworldly creatures.

Cyboid also promises to innovate in several other areas, such as using vibration effects, multi-channel music and spatial sounds to alert players to in-game events, whether they're around a corner or off in the distance. A 'smart mix' system for randomising the placement of creatures, weapons and power-ups should ensure that no two games are the same, whilst promised add-ons could extend the appeal further with new levels and monsters.

If Cyboid can fulfil even half of these promises, it should be something special. Pop back for our imminent review, or just click 'Track It' to get it sent to you.

(Phew – we managed to get through the entire story without saying it looked exactly like Quake. Doh!)
