More news has leaked out about some of the game modes you can expect to find within the forthcoming Tetris DS.

The most traditional of these is the Mario-themed Standard mode, where you guide the falling Tetriminos (Tetris blocks to you and me) to create complete horizontal lines that then disappear. In the meantime, Mario runs around Super Mario Bros levels in the background.

Perhaps more interesting will be the Touch mode. In this you use your stylus to drag and move the Tetriminos into a giant stack while they are falling so they will land in horizontal lines and immediately disappear. Unlike the frantic Standard mode, where the game speeds up, in Touch mode you’ll get as much time as you need to plan your moves, making it a more strategic and thoughtful twist on the typical Tetris experience.

Tetris DS is also the latest game to be compatible with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for global multiplayer action. It will enable two or four players to go head-to-head, but in the local wi-fi mode you’ll be able to have massive 10 player games with your friends.

Drifting slightly in the release schedule, Tetris DS is now due to fall into shops on the 21st of April.
