DS is winning by three million
New sales figures show Nintendo trumping Sony in handheld race
Seems that some console maker is announcing some sort of record sales every week at the moment (not Gizmondo! - Ed). Last week it was Nintendo and, guess what, this week it's Nintendo as well - albeit Nintendo of America, rather Nintendo of Japan.
Anyhow, the big news is that the DS has sold a grand total of four million units in the US and Canada since its 2004 launch. That's not quite as many as the five million sold in Japan, but pretty impressive nevertheless. And, taking into account the two million-odd sold in Europe, the grand total of DS' in the world is - if our maths is correct - now 11 million. In comparison, Sony has only shipped 10 million of its PSPs to shops, with the number sold estimated to be around eight million.
Sales figures for the ever popular Nintendogs were also announced with 1.5 million virtual doggies now going for walkies all over America. That puts the worldwide total at over three million. Americans also seem keen on Mario Kart DS, which has shifted over one million copies since its late November release. Nintendo's wi-fi game service has been a roaring success, too, with more than 550,000 unique visitors logging on to play over 10 million games.
