Slaughtering zombies has become such a ubiquitous part of smartphone gaming that it's difficult to imagine what things were like before the undead bloodbath began.

In Meridian's Alive4ever Mini - the sequel to the Gold Award-winning shooter Alive 4-ever - you are once again tasked with turning the zombie horde into chunks and gobbets of rancid flesh.

This time, however, you're eviscerating these ghastly ghouls to try and retrieve a prized baseball card out of the clutches of the evil flesh-eaters.

A cannibal holocaust

You are cast as a member of a military organisation tasked with ridding the world of the brain-munching zombies. At the start of the game, you play as Leo, who looks a lot like a cutesy cartoon version of Resident Evil's Chris Redfield.

As the game progresses, you can unlock other members of the team, each of whom has his / her own strengths and weaknesses, plus his / her own unique attacking and defensive skills that can be cultivated.

The order of the day is twin-stick shooting. You'll be set an objective - such as gathering three sets of vaccine, guiding a number of survivors to a safe zone, or murdering enough zombies - which you'll need to complete within the time limit to continue.

Secondary objectives earn you more points, and there are souls to collect, as well. For picking up 100 of these, you receive a soul stone, which you can use to upgrade weaponry and purchase new characters. Alternatively, you can spend some real-world cash to stock up on soul stones.

Apocalypse cow

The levels in Alive4ever Mini are well designed, and the weapons are sufficiently meaty. Even your bog-standard pistol can keep you alive for long enough to finish a mission.

Giant animal-themed bosses punctuate the horde levels, and while disposing of them just requires a bit of pattern recognition, they do provide an exciting change of pace.

Alive4ever Mini certainly isn't the most original of games, but its bursts of violence are entertaining and enjoyable enough for this not to really matter. If you haven't re-killed enough cartoon zombies yet, then there are plenty here to feast on.

Alive4ever Mini

Violent and funny in most of the right places, Alive4ever Mini might just be another follower of the undead fashion, but it does what it sets out to do well enough that you can forgive the absence of new ideas in the game
