LoL: Wild Rift Varus Champion Guide: Best build, items, and everything you need to know
Updated: July 27, 2021

In this League of Legends: Wild Rift Varus guide you'll find everything you need to know about the champion, from his skills and how to allocate them to his build, skill combo, and runes. Here is what you will find in the Varus guide below:

The next Wild Rift champion on the list is a very interesting (and a rather unique) one, Varus, also known as The Arrow Of Retribution. He deals mixed damage (scaling off both AD and AP), so you can choose his build based on your playstyle or your team's needs.

If you want a champion that can be played in every way you can imagine (except tank, but I haven't tried that one yet - who knows, it might be possible?), poking the enemy from a distance and being a lane bully, then you definitely want to check this one out.

League of Legends: Wild Rift Varus skills

Living Vengeance (Passive)

On kill or assist, Varus temporarily gains Attack Speed. This bonus is larger if the enemy is a champion.

Piercing Arrow (Skill 1)

Varus readies and then fires a powerful shot that gains extra range and damage the longer he spends preparing to fire.

Blighted Quiver (Skill 2)

Passive: Varus' basic attacks deal bonus magic damage and applies Blight. Varus' other abilities detonate Blight, dealing magic damage based on the target's maximum Health.

Active: Varus empowers his next Piercing Arrow.

Hail of Arrows (Skill 3)

Varus fires a hail of arrows that deal physical damage and desecrate the ground. Desecrated ground slows enemies' Movement Speed and reduces their self-healing and regeneration.

Chain of Corruption (Skill 4 / Ultimate)

Varus flings out a damaging tendril of corruption that immobilizes the first enemy champion hit and then spreads towards nearby uninfected champions, immobilizing them too on contact.

How to combo as Varus:

Unlike many other champions that we've covered (and that we will cover), Varus can be built in a variety of ways, and still provide the same utility to the team.

Magic Damage build

In the case you decide to play Varus as an Ability Power (AP) carry, then Varus' damage comes from his passive on Skill 2. Every auto-attack will apply a stack of Blight on the target while his other abilities (Skill 1 and 3) will detonate those stacks dealing magic damage (per stack). The more stacks you apply the more damage you'll do (max 3 stacks). You can visibly see the number of stacks a target has (they appear as purple diamonds around the target).

His Skill 4 (Ultimate) does AP damage on hit, will root and apply max number of Blight stacks on the targets.

Until you learn the Ultimate, your only way of applying Blight stacks on your enemy comes from his auto-attacks. Whenever Varus kills an enemy champion or a minion he's granted a good amount of attack speed. So make sure to last hit the minions properly to proc his passive. It will definitely help you apply those stacks faster.

A very easy way to apply max Blight stacks and get some good damage off is the following:

- Skill 2 -> Skill 4 -> Skill 3 -> Skill 1

Physical Damage build

If you decide to build Varus as a Physical damage carry, then most of his damage will come by charging his arrow. In this case, you will start by maxing Skill 1 followed by Skill 3, then max Skill 2 last. You can still use Skill 2 for the extra damage that comes from detonating Blight stacks, but since you are building AD, that damage is very low compared to the AP build.

"Traditional ADC" build

If you find the 'traditional' ADC playstyle more enjoyable then there's another way to itemize Varus. You focus more on your critical strike rate and on-hit damage. Of course, all the combos that we talked about before still apply to this build but most of Varus' damage will come from his auto-attacks.

One of the best combos you can pull off as a "traditional ADC" is the following:

- Skill 3 -> Skill 1-> Skill 2 Make sure to keep a safe distance from your enemies while you're charging Skill 1. Varus has no way of getting away without his Ultimate (when it roots enemies) and his Flash. No matter what kind of item build you choose to go for, there are certain things that you should be aware of. Positioning is the most important aspect of his gameplay, regardless of items and builds.

In what order to level up the skills?

On AD-damage Varus, you want to max out your Skill 1 first, then Skill 3, and finally your Skill 2.

  • Level 1: Skill 1
  • Level 2: Skill 3
  • Level 3: Skill 2
  • Level 4: Skill 1
  • Level 5: Skill 4
  • Level 6: Skill 1
  • Level 7: Skill 1

Keep leveling Skill 1 until it's maxed, then focus on Skill 3, and lastly on Skill 2. Of course, whenever you can, you want to add 1 point into your Skill 4 (ultimate).

On AP-damage Varus, you want to go for Skill 2 first, then Skill 1, and lastly Skill 3.

  • Level 1: Skill 1
  • Level 2: Skill 3
  • Level 3: Skill 2
  • Level 4: Skill 2
  • Level 5: Skill 4
  • Level 6: Skill 2
  • Level 7: Skill 2

Keep leveling Skill 2 until it's maxed, then focus on Skill 1, and lastly on Skill 3. Any chance you get, add 1 point into your Skill 4 (ultimate).

The best summoner spells

Heal: Restores 80-360 Health and grants 30% bonus Movement Speed for 1 second to you and the most wounded nearby ally champion. Healing is halved for champions recently affected by Heal

Flash: Teleport a short distance forward or in the aimed direction.

Wild Rift Varus - The best runes for Varus

The Runes for Varus are typically the same, no matter what item build you go for. At the moment there are no other runes that work well with him apart from Fleet Footwork (maybe Kleptomancy), so just go for that one.
